The Forbidden Glamour
‘The way we see things is affected by what we know or what we believe.’…
‘We never look at just one thing; we are always looking at the relation between things and ourselves. Our vision is continually active, continually moving, continually holding things in a circle around itself, constituting what it presents to us as we are.’ Berger, (1972, p.8-9)
The project aims to make permeable the invisible borders, boundaries between cultures to help the expression of individuality, with the visual details of Hollywood Glamour in the Art Deco movement from the 1920s.
The project goes into further research about the use of veils and masks in different cultures.
The project explores how we change our identity by masking, using makeup/cosmetics and going under the knife (plastic surgeries). Are these changes being made to hide or cover the aesthetical flaw, or for the protection of the self with an additional removable ‘layer’ or the create a new identity?
